Kaudulla National Park is also one of the sites in which the gray slender loris is reportedly found in Sri Lanka. Following the discovery of a two-month-old albino Sri Lankan axis deer calf abandoned by her mother, it is supposed that Kaudulla is probably the only national park in Sri Lanka to have albino axis deer.

Large water birds such as spot-billed pelican and lesser adjutant visit the Kaudulla tank. Fish species in the tank include the freshwater Oreochromis mossambicus. Fejervarya pulla is an endemic amphibian to Sri Lanka that inhabits the National Park. Freshwater turtles, Indian flap-shelled turtle and Indian black turtle are the noteworthy reptiles.

Get an opportunity to see the high biodiversity of Sri Lanka in the form of its rare and endemic wildlife and avian species. You get the option of going on a morning safari or an evening safari.

Kaudulla is known for its massive elephant population, one of the biggest in the country, and serves as a key site to visit for those keen on seeing herds of the majestic beasts roaming free. The Kaudulla was officially designated as a national park on 1 April 2002. This is located in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Based on the characteristics of the plant species that grow in this area, the National Park is classified as a dry zone evergreen forest. It is located 197 kilometers from Colombo. Kaudulla National Park is roughly one hour away from Sigiriya, and makes for a great day trip!

The dry season lies between April and October in the area where Kaudulla National Park is located. The best period to visit is suggested as being from August to December, when you can see the frequent gatherings of the elephant herds. In the other months of the year, we can also see the elephants here. However, elephants can be seen almost every month of the year. Therefore, we can call it a year-round elephant-spotting destination since you can always find elephants regardless of the climate.

During the dry season, herds of elephants and other animal species migrate towards the Kaudulla reservoir from many other surrounding national parks, like Wasgamuwa, Minneriya, and Somawathiya, as these national parks are bounded by and interconnected with each other.

On a good day, you may view and encounter herds of elephants of various sizes. Seeing close to 60-70 wild elephants in one go is not unusual in this area.It is always fascinating to observe elephants and their behavior silently in their natural habitat without disturbing them.
