Minneriya National Park, situated in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka,182 km from Colombo, is a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Established as a national park in 1997, it covers over 88 square kilometers and is home to a rich diversity of animals and birds, making it an essential stop on any Sri Lankan wildlife tour.According to the Wildlife Conservation Department, there are 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 25 species of reptiles, 26 species of fish, and 75 species of butterflies that take refuge in the greenery of the reserve.
Come the months between May and September, and you will be able to witness the largest ‘Gathering’ of elephants in the whole of Asia amounting to around 200 at a time, especially during the dry season. Partaking in a safari during this time will also enable you to witness some amazing species of birds and other mammals, along with an ever-changing terrain covered in lush floral species.
Minneriya National Park is also very near to some other key attractions in Sri Lanka including Sigiriya (also known as the Lion’s Rock) and Dambulla Golden Cave Temple.
Two times a day you can go to Minneriya National Park for the safari. In the morning around 6AM most tour operators arrive at the park, and in the afternoon around 2AM the second tour starts. The safari usually takes about 4 to 5 hours. You can choose the time you prefer, but it is advisable to go in the afternoon because the elephants than come to the Minneriya tank to drink and bath. Of course there is also a lot of other wildlife to see in the park.
Instead of elephants, you able to see so many animals. Minneriya national Park is an important habitat for Sri Lanka’s two endemic monkeys, the purple-faced langur and the toque macaque. Large Herbivorous such as Sri Lankan sambar deer and Sri Lankan axis deer frequent the park. Rare and endangered species such as the Sri Lankan leopard and Sri Lankan sloth bear inhabit Minneriya. Minneriya is one of the areas where the grey slender loris is reported found in sri lanka.
The Minneriya National Park is an important habitat for large water birds such as the lesser adjutant, painted stork, and spot-billed pelican. Minneriya is a dormitory dor many resident as well as migrant bird species.flocks of 2000 little cormorants have been reported. The great white pelican, ruddy turnstone, and grey heron are the other water birds here. Among the endemic birds are Sri Lankan jungle fowl, Sri Lanka hanging parrot, brown-capped babbler,Sri Lanka grey hornbill, black-crested bulbul, and crimson-fronted barbet. The number of threatened birds recorded in this national park is 11.
Among the nine species of amphibians at Minneriya National Park are the endemic and endangered Slender Wood Frog and the Common Tree Frog.Out of the 25 species of reptiles recorded in the park, eight are endemic, including the red-lipped lizard. Water and land monitors are also seen here. The mugger crocodile can be seen near the Minneriya tank. Many species of freshwater fish are found in the Minneriya reservoir.
